A stunning new feature rich resource for the Deaf Christian community from Go! Sign.
EyeGaze have completed the development of this exciting new Go! Sign web site with Content Management System. It is still in the early stages of content population but the build of the web site is now complete and the permanent content has been attended to and translated into British Sign Language.
The focus of the design of the Go! Sign site is the delivery of sign language. This site is primarily for Deaf users so whilst the English text is presented as normal the sign language video always plays in the top banner, consistently in the same position, so it is on-screen and ready to play from the moment the page loads.
Integrating the video player into the design of the banner is not only a pleasing aesthetic consideration it also promotes the idea that the sign language is intrinsic to the purpose of the site and not added as an afterthought. It is vital that the Deaf Internet (i.e. sites produced principally for Deaf users) give preference to sign language video and thus allow Deaf people to feel that their language is given due prominence.
The Content Management System (CMS) utilised by EyeGaze for this site is Wordpress. This rapidly evolving open source web application is a cost effective standards compliant system that is built in a prevalent database and scripting language combination (MySQL and PHP). It can thus be applied on Linux web servers with no serious issues.
Another fantastic feature of Wordpress is its optional features or ‘plugins’. Not only can the client now update the English content and the video clips of all the pages, news items and events but they also have a robust e-commerce shop and a paid membership option that gives access to downloads and premium content all within the same CMS.
